First, the leader must have vision. Without vision, you cannot be a leader. Second, the leader must be able to travel into an unexplored path. Normally the tendency is for people to travel along well-laid out ways. Third, the leader must know how to manage success, and even more importantly, failure, the fourth trait is that the leader should have the courage to make decisions. Fifth, the leader should have nobility in management. Every action of the leader should be transparent. And finally, the leader should work with integrity and succeed with integrity.

India Knowledge@Wharton: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure?

Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India's "Rohini" satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.

By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order. My experts -- I had four or five of them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal. It was a big failure.

That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish Dhawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am, and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India]. Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.

The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, "You conduct the press conference today."

I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience.

Welcoming Sahith Reddy Mallem

Communication Channels Formula (N(N-1))/2

Communication is very important on a project. Project manager is communicating 90% of the time. Project Manager is responsible for good communication among team members. In communication there are two entities, sender and the receiver. Receiver is most important. Communication channels is very important subject in PMP studies. Communication channel is a path between the team members. These members belongs to same team.
Formula for determining the number of communication channels on a team.

Communication Channels = [N * (N-1)] / 2 where N is number of team members.

In case there are 3 team members, then number of communication channels are [3* (3-1)] / 2 = 3.

You add one new member. Total members of the team are now 4, then number of communication channels are [4* (4-1)] / 2 = 6.

So by adding one additional member, three communication channels are added. It is a very important to note that by just adding one more team member, your communication channels have doubled.

In case there are 6 team members. Then number of communication channels are [6* (6-1)] / 2 = 15.

Our home has grown by two feet

We’ve been blessed with a baby boy! "Siddharth Reddy Chinnagangannagari".

Siddharth is made up of two Sanskrit language words, siddha (gotten) + arth or artha (meaning). The two words together mean "One who has found meaning (of existence/ purpose/ goal of life)". One who has gained all that has to be gained and achieved all that has to be achieved. That which has to be achieved in life during an individual’s existence have all been classified under four heads and they are called as the four “aims of life” (Purushaartha). They are Righteousness in conduct, (Dharma), Wealth and Possession (Artha), desires and ambitions (Kaama), liberation from imperfections (Moksha). One who has gained all these “four” have nothing more to gain as there cannot be any sense of imperfection in Him. A schedule compression technique is a technique you use to, well, compress your schedule. If you plan out your schedule and you find that the projected end date is too late, then you can use these techniques to bring that date in. However, each of them has its own special kind of cost, and you need to consider that cost when you do it.

The first kind of schedule compression technique is crashing the schedule. That means adding resources to the schedule. You'll generally want to add those resources to the critical path activities because the critical path is the longest path through your schedule. Shortening it will hopefully shorten your project duration. And this can work -- if you add resources to the critical path, then there's a good chance that your new estimate will be lower. But there's a big drawback: those extra resources cost more. And while crashing the schedule doesn't always shorten it, it does always add cost.

The second kind of schedule compression technique is fast tracking. That's when you shorten the critical path by overlapping the activities on it. Again, the goal is to reduce the total duration of the critical path, which will bring the end date closer. Fast tracking has its own downside: it increases risk to your project. A lot of times, you chose not to overlap two activities because you needed the results of one before the other started. Sometimes you can find ways to start the second task before the first one is done, but if the first one is late or doesn't produce deliverables required to do the second task, then your project can run into serious trouble.
